How to Handle An Accident

As much as we try to avoid them, accidents do happen.There are several steps you need to take immediately after a collision to make the process easy on all parties involved. Keep these steps in mind to keep yourself calm if you find yourself in accident.

1.       Be Prepared

It’s important to have the proper supplies, materials, and paperwork in your vehicle. Consider keeping a copy of the following in your glove box:

  • Vehicle registration
  • Vehicle insurance
  • Health insurance cards
  • An additional form of identification
  • Emergency Contacts
  • Paper & a Pen


You don’t know when this will come in handy. It’s better to be overly prepared than underprepared.

2.       Get to Safety

If you’re able, get you and your passengers a safe distance from traffic. Don’t forget to check on the other driver and their passengers as well. If you’re able to move your car, bring it safely to the side of the road. Otherwise, you may need to wait for a tow truck to remove your vehicle from the scene.

3.       Make the Appropriate Calls

Regardless of whether it’s a small fender bender or a major crash, you need to call the police. It’s important to file an incident report for documentation. If necessary, the police and necessary personnel will come out to the scene to assess, provide medical attention, etc. Be sure to take down the name of the officers on the scene, badge or ID numbers, and a phone number in addition to the police report number. It may be wise to ask for a copy of the police report once it’s filed.

4.       Calmly Exchange Information

It’s easy to get riled up after an accident. Tension can run extremely high but it’s important to keep a cool head. Focus on attaining the correct information from the other driver, the passengers and any potential witnesses:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Contact Info: Phone Number and Email Address
  • Insurance Carrier
  • Insurance Policy Number
  • Make, Model & Year of their Car


5.       Take Photos

This is part of the documentation process. Take pictures of damage down to your vehicle, the other vehicle, the location of the accident and even the people involved. You may want to ask for their consent prior to taking their picture. This is all part of keeping everyone involved calm and collected.

6.       Watch Your Words

When talking to the other driver, make sure that the primary focus is on exchanging information. Avoid admitting fault or apologizing. Although against our nature, this can work against you in the future.

7.       File a Claim

It’s important that immediately after the crash you file a claim with your insurance company. Many agencies have 24/7 offices. The sooner you file the claim, the faster a representative can contact you for further information.
